About the Author <\/strong><\/p>\n

I was born in Oxford during the Second World War. We lived in a suburb of Oxford where there were all large houses and mostly elderly folks. We lived in a flat that was upstairs in my grandmother’s house. Grandma was an invalid, and I was not to disturb her. I started school at the local infants’ school, but I was always sick. So my parents sent me as a day girl to a nearby boarding school. It was a good start for me; I learned all about good speech, good grammar, and the importance of keeping one’s arms in at mealtimes, etc. But we day girls were always outsiders. <\/p>\n
