Card79 enters NFT world with Digital Kintsugi

November 11 15:40 2021

Card79 is excited to announce the design studio will be entering the world of NTFs on the platform, OpenSea and releasing a series of NFT’s named ‘Digital Kintsugi’. As fortune tellers of design, Card79 has always held innovation as a core value. The studio has earned a reputation as a tech-forward studio through operating a studio in San Francisco; working with companies whose practice centers around technology, such as Neuralink, Amazon, and Postmates; and becoming one of the few design studios of its scale to branch into NFT’s. The NFT work to be released uses the art of Kintsugi to influence new functionality. By applying their own edge, the designers rebuild and reform digitally scanned artifacts into its own unique form.

Digital Kintsugi was initially inspired by ancient artifacts found in the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Malopolska’s Virtual Museums. The studio later utilises modern technology on ancient artifacts by 3D scanning and printing missing or broken pieces. This upgrades the original pieces with new technology that not only repairs the piece however, gives it a whole new functionality and originality.

Afshin Mehin, designer and CEO of Card79 explains: “As designers we are often working on designing pristine new objects. It’s rare that we have the opportunity to take ancient artifacts and reinterpret them through a modern technologically enhanced lens. This project allowed us to do that by leveraging the philosophy of Kintsugi – the idea that things get better when they are repaired and rebuilt.”

Original kintsugi translates into a sense of peace, recovering and reframing from hardships and embracing the flaws we have. A Japanese ceramic originating in the 15th century, Digital Kintsugi appropriates this method and applies it to the new digital art boom that began in the pandemic, designing a future artifact. Card79’s commitment to the NFT space sends a signal that there’s a home for designers on blockchain both currently and into the future.
