Criminal defense attorney Michael Bruckheim, a partner in the law firm Bruckheim & Pate – Washington DC, recently attended the winter session of the National College of DUI Defense held in Los Angeles, CA. This winter session held by the NCDD adds another impressive educational seminar to the impressive list Bruckheim attends each year.
More than 75 criminal attorneys from around the country attended the two day event in person, while more attorneys attended the event online. The event hosted at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. The National College For DUI Defese (R), Inc. (NCDD) is a professional, non-profit corporation dedicatted to improvement of the criminal defense bar, and to the dissemination of information to the public about DUI Defense Law as a specialty area of law practice.
“It is very important for defense attorneys… particularly DUI defense attorneys… to attend these seminars and learn about different ways of defending clients charging with DUI in Washington, DC or Maryland,” said Mr. Bruckheim.
The seminar focused on the Drug Recognition Expert program (DRE) that is sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and particularly on how the DRE program is not a valid means of determining drug impairment by drivers. Mr. Bruckheim has been trained in the ARIDE program (Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement) which officers also must take to become DREs. Mr. Bruckheim stated, “The DRE program rests on the false premise that DUI officers can perform the function of medical professionals in determining the type of drug that might be affecting a DUI driver. This program will help me serve DUI clients in Washington, DC and Maryland even better than before, particularly if they are charged with a DUI-drugs.”
DUI-drug case are on the rise and drivers charged with DUI in Washington, DC and Maryland are being charged more aggressively with driving while under the influence of marijuana, opiates and PCP.
